Walk down any busy street in an urban area and you’ll see people of all sorts walking around puffing away on these electronic devices. By now most people know that they are electronic cigarettes but maybe aren’t aware of what that entails. This is your beginners guide to vaping!
What’s In It?
There are four main ingredients in e-juices; vegetable glycerin (commonly referred to as VG), propylene glycol (PG), artificial flavourings, and nicotine.
VG is found in a lot of food products due to its sweet taste and having less calories than sugar. It’s also used in a lot of cough medicines, cosmetic products, and more. For vaping purposes it creates a smoother and larger cloud but not as much flavour. Use higher VG e-juices if you’re looking for a big cloud or a smooth hit.
PG is used in things like asthma inhalers, pet food, baby wipes, and more. It is odourless and carries flavour better than VG does. For vaping purposes it is great for ‘stealth’ vaping due to it’s smaller cloud production and for more flavourful juices that have more of a throat hit.
How Do They Work?
To simplify this as much as possible there are 3 components to an e-cigarette; a battery, a tank, and a heating element. The battery supplies the power, the tank holds the juice and is what you inhale from, and the heating element is the only slightly complex part of it. Commonly referred to as a coil or an atomizer, it has cotton inside it and a coil within that. The juice is absorbed onto the cotton and then heated up and vaporized by the coil. The coils need to be replaced fairly regularly depending on usage and should be monitored.
What Should I Look For When Purchasing?
The first thing to decide is what kind of device you want to purchase. If you’re on a tight budget you’re probably looking to start with a pen style. The pens tend to be smaller and sleeker than their box-styled counterparts but they will lack the power and battery life. Pens are great for starting out and finding out if vaping is for you. If you are fairly certain that you want to make the switch to vaping you might want to go for a box-styled unit right away though because most people tend to upgrade once they find out that they enjoy their pens anyways. More power means more vapor which means more nicotine, cloud, and flavour. Look for a starter kit in the 40-60 watt range and you’ll be satisfied.
The next thing is deciding on juices. I recommend going to a local vape shop for this part and sampling their options rather than purchasing online. Most brick and mortar locations have sampling bars so you can get an idea of what flavour you want to start with. A lot of beginners will choose a tobacco inspired flavour at first and then switch to the more fruity and delicious ones after. The flavour options are endless but it is recommended to buy from vape shops rather than corner stores to ensure you are getting a good product that is labeled properly and can be quality assured by the people in the stores.
What Should I Expect When Switching?
There are many addictive parts of cigarettes and switching to vaping only addresses the physical action and the nicotine. Therefore you might find yourself using your e-cigarette more often than you were smoking to make up for it at first. This will level off however and you will start seeing positive results quickly. Changes you can expect include: breathing improvement, no cigarette smell, taste buds improving, more energy, and a burden off of your wallet. That last one is important because although the initial cost is higher than normal, a 30ml bottle of e-juice averages around 12 packs of cigarettes for only $10-30 depending on the brand you get.
Is It An Effective Tool To Quit Smoking?
At my store we like to tell people that “Quitting is Hard, Switching is Easy.” Switching to vaping is very easy for a lot of people because you’re still getting your (glorious) nicotine and maintaining the routine of smoking but with way less harmful ingredients. So don’t think of it as a cessation device as much as transferring your addiction to a less harmful version of itself. We have, however, seen that people are able to lower their nicotine levels and eventually quit vaping much easier than quitting cigarettes. So make the switch today and go from there! Vape on everybody.
